A PRESTWICH pianist’s performance in a ‘pianothon’ has been chosen as a highlight and recorded for national radio.

Yuanfan Yang performed two pieces as part of an eight-hour concert in front of a huge audience at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.

The 11-year-old’s was one chosen to be recorded on BBC Radio 3’s Play The Nation show.

Yuanfan, of Bland Road, said: "I was a bit nervous.

"I did two performances - Beethoven’s Sonata in C Minor as a solo and Haydn’s II Maestra e Lo Scolare with my teacher Murray McLachlan."

Yuanfran first started tinkling the ivories aged six and had already achieved grade eight - the highest possible - with distinction within two years.

By the age of 10 the piano prodigy had achieved the Diploma of the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music which is usually awarded to university students.

He has played concerts in Leeds and London and appeared on the BBC’s Take a Bow programme performing his own piece ‘Fantasy in G.'

Yuanfan lists Mozart, Beethoven, Shopan, Rachmaninov and Brahms as among his favourite composers.

The youngster grew up in Leeds and moved to Prestwich with his father Dr Lan Yang, a linguistics professor, and mother Jieling Yu, a Chinese language teacher, this summer.

He added: "I just enjoy playing. "I like performing and I enjoy composing as well.

"I definitely see it as a career for me."

Dr Yang added: "Along with his development, Yuanfan has been often invited to give performances for charities.

"His development was greatly attributed to the support of various sources, including educational and cultural institutions, professional personnel - he can never thank his tutors enough - and public audiences, and he is ready to work for others and for public undertakings.

"Moreover, in the past years, we lived in a friendly area in which there were many old people.

"In festivals, holidays or the old neighbours’ birthdays, we often invited the old neighbours to our house and the boy specially played for them which they said brought happiness to the neighbourhood."
